ZF has integrated its latest steer-by-wire system into Nio’s flagship electric vehicle, the ET9. This groundbreaking technology eliminates the mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the front wheels, marking a significant advancement in automotive steering systems.

The system features a mechatronic actuator placed between the wheels, which replaces the traditional mechanical components. The steering commands are sent via a steering wheel actuator, and an electric motor provides torque feedback to simulate road conditions. This system also adapts the steering ratio based on speed and driving conditions, enhancing vehicle control.

As part of the broader “Chassis Solutions” Division launched by ZF in 2024, the steer-by-wire system is part of a suite of fully electronic steering, braking, and damping systems. These innovations are supported by ZF’s proprietary cubiX software, which plays a key role in the development of software-defined vehicles.

ZF’s steer-by-wire technology is already in use by another major global automaker and is also being implemented in Europe. The technology represents a shift toward more efficient and flexible vehicle systems, eliminating the need for fluids and mechanical connections in steering.

This development positions ZF at the forefront of modern chassis system technology, offering a wide range of by-wire solutions that promise to revolutionize vehicle dynamics and user experience in electric vehicles.
