In a significant move towards sustainable urban mobility, the Delhi government is drafting the Electric Vehicle Policy 2.0, which proposes to cease the registration of CNG-powered auto-rickshaws from August 15, 2025. Existing permits for CNG autos will not be renewed; instead, they will be replaced with permits for electric auto-rickshaws. This initiative aims to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles and reduce air pollution in the capital.
The draft policy also outlines plans to phase out fossil fuel-powered vehicles across various categories. Notably, it recommends that all CNG auto-rickshaws older than ten years be replaced or converted to electric vehicles. Furthermore, starting August 15, 2026, two-wheelers running on petrol, diesel, or CNG will not be permitted, and from August 15, 2025, new registrations of diesel, petrol, or CNG three-wheelers for goods carriers will be prohibited.
The policy also mandates that all garbage collection vehicles owned or leased by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, New Delhi Municipal Council, and Delhi Jal Board transition to electric vehicles in a phased manner, aiming for a 100% electric fleet by December 31, 2027. Additionally, public transport buses operated by the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS) will be converted into electric buses for intra-city operations, with only BS VI buses allowed for inter-state services.
These measures are part of Delhi’s broader strategy to combat air pollution and promote clean energy transportation. The government had previously extended its current Electric Vehicle policy by 15 days after its expiration on March 31, indicating a commitment to swiftly implement the new policy upon approval by the Delhi Cabinet.
The proposed policy reflects Delhi’s proactive approach to environmental sustainability, aiming to replace a significant number of fossil fuel-run vehicles with electric alternatives. By setting clear timelines and targets, the government seeks to improve air quality and establish Delhi as a leader in electric mobility.
