This innovative technology aims to extinguish fires within five minutes of ignition, potentially setting a new standard in EV safety protocols.
Traditional EV safety systems often rely on heat-resistant materials to delay thermal events. In contrast, Hyundai Mobis’ approach actively prevents the spread of heat to adjacent cells. The newly developed Battery System Assembly (BSA) integrates a fire extinguishing device, a robust battery case, and an intelligent battery management system (BMS). This combination allows real-time monitoring of battery temperature, voltage, and internal pressure, enabling precise and swift deployment of the extinguishing agent.
The fire suppressant used in the system boasts a capacity five times greater than that of a standard 3.3 kg home extinguisher. It is noted for its excellent cooling, insulation, and eco-friendly properties. Additionally, the software component features redundant logic and multiple safety layers to enhance decision-making during thermal anomalies.
