BYD compact Seagull EV, launched in April 2023 in China, has quickly become a bestseller—second only to Tesla’s Model Y in the Chinese market with over 442,000 units registered in 2024.
Buoyed by this success, BYD is gearing up to roll out the Seagull globally. The model has already been introduced in Latin America as the “Dolphin Mini” and is set to launch in Europe this spring as the “Dolphin Surf,” featuring revised styling and battery options tailored to regional preferences.
The European launch aims to undercut existing cheap EVs by offering strong value. Priced at €22,990–24,990 (now discounted to €19,990–24,990 until June), the Dolphin Surf competes directly with models like the Dacia Spring and Volkswagen ID.2.
BYD’s international growth strategy includes expanding its dealer footprint—Europe will see 12 new markets and over 1,000 sales locations added in 2025—alongside establishing local production to dodge trade barriers like EU tariffs.
Supporting this rollout is BYD’s vertically integrated supply chain—controlling its own batteries, motors, and more—allowing aggressive pricing. The Seagull starts at under $10,000 in China, with global sales up 45% to 170,000 units this year.
Overall, the Seagull’s global push aligns with BYD’s broader ambition: doubling overseas sales and challenging EV market incumbents worldwide by offering affordable, locally tailored electric vehicles.
