Chinese electric vehicle (EV) giant BYD has reportedly begun real-world testing of a cutting-edge solid-state battery technology that could deliver an unprecedented 1,500 km driving range on a single charge. This development could mark a game-changing leap for EV performance and consumer confidence.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the new solid-state battery is undergoing road tests under BYD’s internal research and development program. The prototype battery not only offers longer range but is also believed to enhance safety by minimizing the risks of thermal runaway, a common concern in lithium-ion battery systems.

Solid-state batteries differ significantly from conventional liquid electrolyte-based batteries by replacing the flammable liquid with a solid electrolyte, offering higher energy density and reduced fire hazards. BYD is reportedly developing the technology under its subsidiary FinDreams Battery, which plays a key role in the company’s EV innovation pipeline.

Market experts suggest that if successful, BYD could become the first global EV maker to commercialize solid-state battery technology at scale, ahead of competitors like Toyota, which also has similar programs underway. The claimed 1,500 km range would more than double the current range of many popular electric models, including BYD’s own Seal and Han EVs.

This breakthrough aligns with China’s broader push to dominate next-generation battery technologies and increase global EV competitiveness. BYD, backed by investor Warren Buffett, has already established itself as a global EV leader and is now aiming to strengthen its technological edge with this battery innovation.

While BYD has not officially confirmed a launch timeline, insiders anticipate the solid-state battery could debut in premium models by late 2025 or early 2026, pending regulatory approvals and manufacturing readiness. If realized, the tech could address two of the biggest EV adoption barriers — range anxiety and battery safety.
