GreenPower Motor Company has announced the rollout of a new $5 million all-electric school bus pilot program in New Mexico, aiming to accelerate the adoption of zero-emission student transportation in rural and underserved communities.
The pilot will be conducted in partnership with the New Mexico Public Education Department (PED) and the state’s Department of Transportation, under funding made available through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) and state-level clean energy initiatives.
As part of the program, GreenPower’s Type D BEAST and Type A Nano BEAST electric school buses will be deployed across several school districts. These buses are designed to provide a clean, quiet, and safe ride for students while reducing harmful tailpipe emissions.
The project will serve as a proof-of-concept for the broader integration of electric buses across New Mexico’s educational system. Initial deployments are set to begin in early 2026, with performance data, maintenance needs, and operational feedback gathered throughout the trial phase.
GreenPower will also provide driver training, service support, and telematics, ensuring participating schools and operators are equipped to transition smoothly from diesel to electric. The initiative will prioritize rural areas where vehicle emissions often have a disproportionate environmental impact.
This pilot underscores New Mexico’s commitment to sustainable transportation and clean energy adoption in public services. If successful, the project could pave the way for a statewide rollout of electric school buses, aligning with national goals for school fleet electrification.
