Ford Unveils Universal EV Platform to Deliver Affordable Electric Vehicles

Ford Motor on Monday revealed its new Universal EV Platform and accompanying Universal EV Production System, marking a sweeping shift in strategy to build more affordable, software-defined electric vehicles.

The centerpiece of this initiative is a $5 billion investment: $2 billion to upgrade the Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky and $3 billion for Ford’s BlueOval Battery Park in Michigan. The investment is expected to create or preserve nearly 4,000 jobs across both sites.

At the heart of the breakthrough lies a newly designed assembly tree production system, which replaces the traditional linear assembly line. The front, rear, and structural battery modules are built on separate lines and merged near the end of the process. This approach reduces parts by 20%, uses 25% fewer fasteners, cuts workstations by 40%, and speeds up assembly time by 15%.

The first vehicle to ride atop this new architecture is a mid-size electric pickup truck, slated for launch in 2027 with a target starting price of $30,000. Ford says it will deliver Mustang EcoBoost–level acceleration and even outpace the Toyota RAV4 for interior passenger space—while still featuring a traditional truck bed and a front trunk (“frunk”).

A key cost-saving innovation is the use of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) prismatic batteries—which are cobalt-free and nickel-free. These batteries also act as the vehicle’s floor structure, lowering the center of gravity, enhancing handling, and boosting cabin quietness and space.

Ford CEO Jim Farley likened the effort to a modern-day “Model T moment,” emphasizing the company’s ambition to deliver efficient, feature-rich electric vehicles at scale. Wall Street responded positively: analysts praised the cost-cutting design, and Barron’s labeled the move a bold but necessary pivot in the evolving EV landscape.
