Xiaomi has officially launched its first European Research and Development (R&D) and Design Centre in Munich, Germany. This marks the company’s first step in vehicle engineering and design outside China, as it prepares to enter the European electric vehicle (EV) market by 2027.

The Munich centre will focus on Xiaomi’s “Human x Car x Home” vision, integrating smart lifestyle, connected mobility, and intelligent vehicle systems. Key areas include EV technology development, performance vehicle projects, design innovation, and user experience research. Munich’s reputation as a European automotive hub will help Xiaomi meet regional standards for safety, performance, and design.

To lead the European operations, Xiaomi has recruited senior automotive professionals, including former BMW executives. Rudolf Dittrich, a seasoned BMW veteran, will head the R&D centre. The initial team will be small and elite, with fewer than 50 engineers and designers working on performance variants, tuning, and concept development.

The centre is a strategic move to prepare Xiaomi for its 2027 EV launch in Europe. A local presence will help the company understand European regulations, tailor vehicle features for regional customers, and strengthen brand credibility and innovation on the continent.

Xiaomi’s expansion follows the success of its EV models in China. The YU7 SUV received 289,000 orders within one hour, while the SU7 Ultra set the Nürburgring EV lap record, highlighting Xiaomi’s performance capabilities. This momentum shows strong potential for Xiaomi in the global EV market.

Looking ahead, the Munich centre will collaborate with European research institutions and automotive talent to ensure competitive and region-specific EVs. Xiaomi aims to combine innovation, performance, and local expertise to establish a strong presence in Europe’s EV sector.
