Wärtsilä has been recognised among the world’s top 10 battery energy storage system (BESS) integrators in Wood Mackenzie’s inaugural Global BESS Integrator Comprehensive Ranking. The company is also the only European-headquartered player to feature in the global top 10, highlighting its growing position in the international energy storage market.
Wood Mackenzie’s 2026 ranking places Sungrow first, Tesla second and CATL third, while BYD ranks fourth. Envision and Trina Storage share fifth place, followed by Fluence, LG, Canadian Solar and Wärtsilä in the remaining top-10 positions. The ranking reflects the increasing importance of BESS integration as energy storage becomes a key part of modern power systems.
The assessment looked beyond manufacturing scale and considered factors such as technology maturity, research and development, safety, supply chain resilience, ESG performance and financial strength. Wood Mackenzie also highlighted project execution, system design, commissioning capabilities and long-term operational support as important factors for BESS integrators as projects become larger and more complex.
Wärtsilä said the recognition reflects its integrator-led approach, which combines project delivery expertise, software capabilities and lifecycle services. The company has more than a decade of experience in energy storage and has delivered projects across multiple global markets, supporting customers through different stages of an energy storage asset’s lifecycle.
A key part of Wärtsilä’s offering is its GEMS Digital Energy Platform, which is designed to optimise energy storage system performance and help customers respond to changing market conditions. The platform supports operational optimisation and can help energy storage assets improve reliability and maximise their value over time.
The recognition comes as global demand for battery storage continues to grow and the role of BESS expands across power systems. For Wärtsilä, its inclusion in Wood Mackenzie’s global top 10 highlights the importance of combining storage technology with software, project execution and long-term lifecycle support in the evolving energy storage market.
