NTPC has terminated the contract awarded to G R Infraprojects for a 400 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project at the Mouda Super Thermal Power Station in Maharashtra. NTPC said the termination was due to the contractor’s failure to meet contractual obligations and achieve the required project progress. The development was announced by NTPC on September 19, 2026.
The project was awarded to GR Infraprojects in March 2026 with a total contract value of ₹413.37 crore. GRIL’s regulatory filing states that the contract value was exclusive of GST and that the project had a completion period of 15 months from the appointed date. The EPC package covered the implementation of the BESS at the Mouda thermal power station.
According to NTPC, the project experienced significant delays in critical activities. The power company said it issued a contractual notice to GRIL seeking immediate corrective action, but the required remedial measures were not undertaken. NTPC subsequently terminated the contract with immediate effect in accordance with the applicable contractual provisions.
Following the termination, NTPC said it has encashed available securities worth approximately ₹91 crore under the contractual provisions. The company has also initiated the process of re-tendering the 400 MWh BESS project at the risk and cost of GRIL. NTPC said it is taking measures to facilitate an early re-award and timely implementation of the project.
However, GR Infraprojects has separately presented its position on the termination. In a September 16 regulatory filing, GRIL said it had issued a termination notice to NTPC citing continuing force majeure and war-risk circumstances, along with contractual issues arising from the agreements. GRIL also said it had invoked the applicable dispute-resolution mechanism and reserved its rights and remedies under the contracts.
The Mouda BESS project is part of NTPC’s wider efforts to deploy battery energy storage alongside conventional generation assets and support grid flexibility and renewable energy integration. Following the termination, NTPC has moved ahead with a fresh tender for the same 400 MWh BESS package at Mouda, with the new tender issued on September 22, 2026.
