Sungrow has completed the grid connection and commissioning of the 350 MW/1,243 MWh Hams Hall Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in the West Midlands, United Kingdom, in partnership with energy storage owner-operator BW ESS. The project progressed from grid connection to commercial operation in just 20 days and is expected to become Europe’s largest operational battery energy storage project by capacity.

Located adjacent to National Grid’s Hams Hall substation, the facility is designed to balance electricity supply and demand, strengthen grid resilience and support the integration of renewable energy into the UK’s electricity system. The project uses Sungrow’s PowerTitan 2.0 energy storage technology, which incorporates grid-forming capabilities, enhanced safety features and a cost-efficient system design.

The commissioning process involved close coordination between Sungrow and BW ESS, with dedicated battery engineering teams deployed directly to the project site. During warm commissioning, the teams focused on identifying faults and verifying chiller operations before proceeding to hot commissioning. Operational technology (OT) engineers also remained on-site during hot commissioning to support system integration and address operational issues.

Frequent communication between the customer representatives and Sungrow’s headquarters helped accelerate technical decisions and resolve outstanding issues during commissioning. Sungrow’s Vice President for Europe, James Li, said the project’s rapid delivery reflected engineering expertise, thorough preparation and close collaboration between the companies. BW ESS Chief Technology Officer Nan Jia described the achievement as a shared engineering effort, following the companies’ earlier collaboration on the Bramley BESS project in Hampshire.

The Hams Hall project is expected to expand during its second phase, increasing its total capacity to 400 MW/1,424 MWh. According to BW ESS, the fully expanded facility could support the electricity needs of approximately 1.3 million homes for up to 3.5 hours. The additional capacity will contribute to the UK’s growing battery storage infrastructure as renewable energy generation expands.

The Hams Hall development further strengthens Sungrow’s collaboration with BW ESS in the UK, which also includes the Bramley BESS project in Hampshire. The project combines Sungrow’s PowerTitan energy storage technology with dedicated engineering expertise and on-site technical support. Sungrow also reported that its global installations of power electronic converters exceeded 1,100 GW as of June 2026, highlighting its continued involvement in renewable energy and utility-scale energy storage applications.
