Tata Motors, which offers up to five battery-powered vehicles, is the clear market leader in the passenger car industry’s electric vehicle (EV) segment. For its whole EV lineup, the domestic automaker has revealed new ranges. Following minor modifications to the MIDC range testing by the Indian government, this took place.

The Ministry of Road & Transport has established specific guidelines for carrying out the MIDC range testing in order to guarantee that the range of every EV is carefully tested against a single standard. It is required of all OEMs to publicly announce the range certified from these testing.

The MIDC testing cycle consists of two sections: Extra Urban, which represents highway driving, and Urban, which represents city driving. Until recently, just the urban (city) portion of the cycle was being evaluated with EVs. All automakers are now required by the MoRTH to test and report range figures that take into account both urban and extraurban cycles. Consequently, all EVs’ full-charge ranges are expected to alter.

Tata Motors has unveiled the updated ranges for all of its electric vehicles in line with the most recent advancements. The business will begin disclosing the certified range of all of its electric vehicles (EVs) from MIDC’s P1+P2 (Urban + Extra Urban) test on September 10, 2024. In addition, Tata will keep freely disclosing the C75 range disclosure together with the near real-world driving range in order to enhance customer comprehension.

Modifications to MIDC range testing

The average testing speed has been raised from 19 mph to 31 mph, and the maximum speed has been modified from 50 mph to 90 mph with the new MIDC range tests that include a highway run. Consequently, EV range estimates have dropped. It should be mentioned that EV ranges are typically shorter when cycling on highways than when driving in cities.

The range of the 55kWh battery type of the Curvv EV has been lowered from 585 km to 502 km on a single charge, as can be seen in the above table. In a similar vein, the 40.5 kWh Nexon EV’s range has shrunk from 465 km to 390 km after a full charge. The certified range of the Punch EV with the 35 kWh battery pack is now 365 km, down from 421 kilometers on a single charge.

Furthermore, according to the firm, 75% of consumers should expect the C75 values to be close to real-world driving range. Based on the 1.65 lakh electric automobiles that have been sold to date, according to the business. All Indian EV OEMs are anticipated to provide their updated ranges in the future in accordance with the updated MIDC test cycle.
