Bihar is set to roll out 150 electric buses by the end of August, marking a significant shift toward greener public transport and reduced air pollution across the state.
Under this initiative, 80 of the electric buses will ply in Patna, covering key urban corridors including Bailey Road, Danapur, Patna City, Phulwari AIIMS, Bihta, Maner, and Digha. An additional 30 buses will serve nearby rural blocks such as Masaurhi, Naubatpur, and Paliganj.
The remaining 40 buses will be deployed in cities including Gaya, Purnia, Bhagalpur, and Muzaffarpur. This expansion reflects Bihar’s broader green transportation goal, extending zero-emission services to tier‑2 cities that have long awaited enhanced public transit.
To support this rollout, charging infrastructure is being upgraded. Two high-capacity charging hubs at Phulwarisharif Transport Complex and Bairiya Bus Terminal in Patna are being established, each capable of handling up to 30 buses simultaneously. Other cities will see charging point rollouts by the August deadline.
Once operational, the buses will operate daily until around 9 PM, covering both intra-city and inter-block routes. The Bihar State Road Transport Corporation (BSRTC) will monitor the fleet in real time via a central control and command centre to manage services and respond to issues swiftly.
The operational launch by August completes a pivotal phase of Bihar’s public transport modernization, aligning with national efforts under schemes like PM‑e‑Drive and PM‑e‑Bus Sewa, which aim to add thousands of electric buses across India.
