The BMW Group commenced 2025 with a modest 1.4% decrease in global vehicle deliveries, totaling 586,149 units in Q1. This dip was primarily influenced by a significant 17.2% drop in sales within the Chinese market, where foreign luxury automakers face intensified competition from local brands and subdued consumer sentiment due to a prolonged property crisis.

Surge in Battery Electric Vehicle Sales

Contrasting the overall sales decline, BMW’s battery electric vehicle (BEV) segment experienced remarkable growth. The company delivered 109,516 fully-electric vehicles across its BMW, MINI, and Rolls-Royce brands in Q1, marking a 32.4% increase compared to the same period in 2024. This achievement sets a new quarterly record for the group’s BEV sales .

European Market Leads BEV Expansion

Europe emerged as a pivotal market for BMW’s electric vehicle expansion, with BEV sales soaring by 64.2% in the region. This surge is attributed to the introduction of new electric models and the enforcement of stricter carbon emissions regulations by the European Union, which have collectively spurred consumer demand for electric vehicles .

MINI’s Electric Transition Gains Momentum

The MINI brand has shown significant progress in its transition to electric mobility. In Europe, one out of every three MINIs sold was a BEV, while in China, over half of MINI’s sales comprised electric vehicles. This trend underscores the growing consumer acceptance and demand for MINI’s electric offerings .

India’s Market Reflects Positive Trends

In India, BMW Group reported a 7% increase in sales during Q1 2025, reaching 3,914 units. This growth was driven by strong demand for SUVs and electric vehicles. Notably, the electric vehicle portfolio, including both BMW and MINI brands, recorded a 206% increase in sales, totaling 646 units. Electric vehicles now constitute 17% of BMW’s total sales in India .

Strategic Outlook and Future Plans

Looking ahead, BMW Group India aims to expand its electric vehicle lineup to over a dozen models by 2025, including a two-wheeler, to maintain its leadership in the luxury EV segment. Globally, BMW plans to introduce more than 25 electrified vehicles, encompassing both battery electric and plug-in hybrid models, as part of its commitment to a sustainable and diversified mobility future .
