BYD, a Chinese electric vehicle producer, arranges to expand a facility in Karachi in alliance with a local partner, to move into Pakistan’s evolving EV market. During its brand launch ceremony, the business goals to release three vehicles, involving an SUV and a sedan. According to reports, BYD arranges to reveal other models in the future, involving battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

According to a BYD representative, the company intends to enter the market with both plug-in hybrid and battery-electric vehicles. But we do not yet know anything about investments or other details.

Chinese companies SAIC Motors, Great Wall Motor, and Chongqing Changan Automobile have just entered Pakistan. These companies will compete with local subsidiaries of Japanese companies like Toyota Motor and Honda Motor. In Pakistan, however, EV sales still account for a modest percentage of total car sales.

According to the report, BYD and Mega Conglomerate, one of Pakistan’s biggest corporate conglomerates, have forged a partnership that goes beyond the standard dealership model employed in the majority of other nations. The Chinese company will form a joint venture with Mega Motors, which is the biggest independent electricity generator in Pakistan and a subsidiary of Hub Power.

The updated facility will be constructed close to Port Qasim in Karachi, which is home to assembly plants for well-known automakers like Toyota, Suzuki Motor, and Kia. The facility is expected to be completed in the first half of 2026, according to the report. The project’s specifics are still being worked out, though.

Additionally, BYD plans to open showrooms in Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi. Sales are expected to begin in the fourth quarter of this year.

With three million cars sold in 2023, BYD is the most popular car brand in China. To capitalize on its status as a leading manufacturer of EVs and hybrids, the company is quickly expanding, especially in Southeast Asia, Europe, and Latin America. The Shenzhen-based company, which has operations in over 80 nations, has agreements in place to start producing electric vehicles with Hungary, Turkey, and Brazil. Additionally, it launched its first production facility outside of China in Thailand last month.
