BYD Auto is preparing to launch its third model, the Seal all-electric sedan, in order to strengthen its position in the Indian market. The Seal EV is set to debut on March 5 and will be added to BYD’s current portfolio in India, which also consists of the e6 MPV and Atto 3 SUV. Dealerships have begun accepting reservations for the new model, as previously reported, and the Seal has been seen undergoing testing outside of Chennai.

Internationally, the Seal sedan is available with two different battery options: a larger 82.5kWh battery with a stated range of 700km, and a 61.4kWh pack that can go up to 500km according to the CLTC standard. It is expected that India will make the latter option available.

The 82.5kWh battery can be quickly charged up to 150kW thanks to BYD’s unique “Blade Battery” technology. It generates 530 horsepower and 670 Nm of torque between two electric motors, one on each axle. Impressively, for a vehicle weighing around 2.2 tonnes, the all-wheel-drive Seal can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds and achieve a top speed of 180 km/h.

With a wheelbase of 2,920mm, the Seal is a sleek sedan that measures 4,800mm in length, 1,875mm in width, and 1,460mm in height. It has a 53-liter front trunk (frunk) and a 400-liter boot. The Seal’s name draws inspiration from the water, and its design adheres to BYD’s “ocean aesthetics” idea. Its unique features include flush-fitting door handles, an all-glass roof akin to a coupe.

It is anticipated that the BYD Seal will cost approximately Rs 50 lakh (ex-showroom). Dealers have stated that the Seal EV would start to be delivered soon following the March 5 price announcement. Although there are no direct rivals in the Seal’s class, considering its price range, it is anticipated to face up against cars like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 SUV and the Kia EV6 crossover.
