The Delhi government has introduced a draft of its Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2.0, aiming to prohibit the registration of new petrol, diesel, and CNG two-wheelers starting August 15, 2026. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to reduce air pollution in the capital.
The draft policy also seeks to phase out CNG-powered autorickshaws by halting new registrations and permit renewals from August 15, 2025. Existing CNG autorickshaws over ten years old would need to be replaced or retrofitted with electric systems.
Additionally, the policy proposes that all municipal solid waste collection vehicles transition to electric models by December 31, 2027. Public transport buses operated by the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS) would also shift to electric buses for intra-city operations, while BS VI-compliant buses would be used for inter-state services.
For private vehicle owners, the draft policy recommends that individuals with two existing vehicles must purchase an electric vehicle if they wish to buy a third. This measure aims to encourage the adoption of electric cars among residents.
The draft EV Policy 2.0 is pending approval from the Delhi Cabinet. Officials indicate that some provisions, particularly those concerning two-wheelers, may be revised before final implementation.
