Delhi has made history by having the highest monthly electric vehicle sales in the country, state by state. In December, Delhi registered 7,046 electric vehicles, an increase of 86% year on year. Since the implementation of the EV policy, the UT has registered 93,239 electric vehicles, with two-wheelers accounting for nearly 55% of total EV sales in 2022. Transport Minister Kailash Gablot stated that Delhi has always led from the front, making it the country’s EV capital and that it is equipped with the necessary private and public charging infrastructure, with over 2300 charging points and 200 battery swapping stations in operation across the city.
On August 7, 2020, the Delhi EV Policy was launched, with 2-wheelers (2W) and 3-wheelers (3W) identified as priority vehicle segments. The policy aims to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles so that they account for 25% of all new vehicle registrations by 2024. Chief Minister Arvind Kanwal launched the “Switch Delhi” campaign in February 2021 to raise awareness about the benefits of such vehicles in keeping Delhi clean and pollution-free. With EV sales in December, Delhi is nearly halfway to meeting its goal of reaching two-thirds of its target. The 13 models of Incentivisation, Innovation, and Inclusion can be attributed to the success of the Delhi EV policy.
