In a significant move towards promoting electric vehicle (EV) adoption, Delhi has announced that at least 20% of parking spaces in new buildings will be dedicated to EVs. This initiative, part of the upcoming Delhi EV Policy 2.0, aims to provide better infrastructure for EV charging and encourage the use of electric cars across the city. The policy will also require older buildings to set aside 5% of their parking spaces for EVs to ensure the growth of the necessary charging infrastructure.
The policy mandates that new buildings with a minimum of 20 parking spots must allocate at least 20% of those spaces for EV charging stations. These buildings will not be granted occupancy certificates unless they comply with the new rule. For example, a building with 100 parking spaces will need to dedicate at least 20 spaces for EV charging facilities. However, this rule will not apply to smaller buildings with fewer than 20 parking spaces.
The regulations will be integrated into the building bylaws of both the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). The goal is to ensure that EV charging points become a common feature in urban areas, making EV ownership more convenient for residents and businesses alike.
To address the issue of insufficient charging infrastructure, the Delhi transport department is also planning the installation of fast charging stations along key roads, including under flyovers and along the Ring Road. These initiatives are part of a broader effort to ensure that Delhi is equipped with 13,200 public charging stations by 2030, with one charging point available every 5 kilometers. In addition, subsidies will be provided to make the setup of these stations more economically viable for businesses.
In a bid to regulate parking, the policy may also introduce fines for non-EVs parked in designated EV-only spots. With these comprehensive changes, Delhi is taking strong steps toward creating an EV-friendly environment, fostering a shift towards more sustainable transportation options in the city.
