India’s electric vehicle (EV) and hybrid segment continued its upward momentum in May 2025, with automakers witnessing consistent buyer interest despite broader market uncertainties. Latest sales data reveals that both battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and strong hybrids saw encouraging volumes, especially from leading manufacturers like Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, and Toyota.
As per available figures, Maruti Suzuki reported sales of 6,437 units of its strong hybrid models, such as the Grand Vitara and Invicto, in May. This marks a 12.6% rise over April, highlighting growing consumer preference for hybrid solutions amid ongoing infrastructure development for full EVs.
Tata Motors, a front-runner in India’s EV space, posted EV sales of 5,558 units in May, registering a moderate 3.3% month-on-month increase. The company remains a key driver of electric mobility, with popular models like the Nexon EV and Tiago EV catering to urban and semi-urban markets.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor maintained its strong hybrid momentum, delivering 5,828 units last month—marginally higher than April. The carmaker’s consistent performance underlines the traction hybrid powertrains are gaining among consumers who seek fuel efficiency without range anxiety.
Honda Cars India also recorded growth in hybrid car sales, with 476 units of its City e:HEV sedan sold in May, up 5% from April. This steady growth underscores the widening acceptance of alternative drivetrains beyond pure EVs, especially in the mid-premium segment.
With consumer demand holding steady and infrastructure gradually improving, both hybrid and electric vehicles are expected to witness sustained adoption in the coming quarters. The positive monthly growth hints at a broader shift in consumer sentiment toward cleaner mobility alternatives.
