Over 10,000 electric vehicles (EVs) have been successfully integrated to Flipkart’s delivery fleet as part of the Climate Group’s EV100 program. This is a major step toward the company’s aim of having a fully electric logistics network by 2030. This achievement follows the company’s steady integration of electric vehicles (EVs) into its last-mile delivery services over the past few years. The milestone was announced ahead of Flipkart’s upcoming Sustainability Action Summit 2024, which will take place at the India Habitat Center in New Delhi on November 13.
Currently, 75% is located in Tier-I cities including Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Chennai. In August 2024, Flipkart reported that more than 55% of their grocery orders were being delivered by EVs. Additionally, during the 2024 holiday season, over sixteen percent of grocery deliveries to Tier-2+ cities—such as Lucknow, Sonipat, Ludhiana, Bhubaneswar, Malda, Hubli, and Vizag—were made by the EV fleet, ensuring a more ecologically friendly delivery during a peak period.
Due to the deployment of EVs, last-mile delivery efficiency has increased by 20%, and hub-level operational expenses have fallen.
As part of its transition, Flipkart has invested in charging infrastructure, working with the Adani Group to install 190 chargers in 38 designated charging stations in Tier-2 cities. The company plans to make more improvements to the infrastructure for public charging stations in order to promote broader EV use. Flipkart has also adopted a Last-Mile Aggregator strategy in Karnataka, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu, working with fleet operators that prioritize EVs in an effort to enhance supply chain operations and boost the use of EVs.
Nishant Gupta, Head of Sustainability at Flipkart, emphasized the company’s continuous efforts to electrify its fleet and the importance of ecosystem interventions to sustain and accelerate EV adoption in India. He was confident that Flipkart would be able to meet its 2030 goal of having a fleet that is fully electric for the last mile thanks to its partnerships with a variety of stakeholders, including financial institutions, OEMs, EV service providers, and partners in charging infrastructure. Gupta continued by saying that moving to electric vehicles (EVs) not only helps Flipkart achieve its environmental goals, but it also improves customer experience for delivery executives and contributes to cleaner communities.
