In less than a year, Hero MotoCorp intends to begin producing the all-electric Surge 32 in series. This odd vehicle, which combines a two-wheeler and a three-wheeler, can now be registered under the newly created L2/L5 category. According to sources, Hero MotoCorp is anticipated to make 10,000 units a year, and by mid-2025, the model may be ready for the market.

To get the S32 recognized for registration, Hero MotoCorp and Surge had to work with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to create a new registration category. When a three-wheeled motor vehicle is built so that a non-self-propelled rear module unit is merged with a two-wheeled vehicle of category L2, it is referred to as a “2-Wheeler-3-Wheeler Combi Module.” It can be separated or combined as needed.

Hero MotoCorp fully owns the business “Surge,” which is a part of HeroHatch, the firm’s incubation center. Over the past three years, the company has been working on a modular EV platform that it calls the S32. The Surge 32 is built on top of this platform. What makes it unique is its quick and simple transition between two-wheelers and three-wheelers. The Surge 32, which has 40 patents, is basically a rickshaw without a front wheel that can be equipped with an e-scooter to act as a front wheel. In this arrangement, the back wheel of the e-scooter is raised off the ground and sits on the rickshaw platform.

The Surge 32, designed and built in India, is changing the way people think about three-wheelers with its capacity to convert from a two-wheeler to a three-wheeler in just three minutes. The Red Dot: Best of the Best award for product design was just given to it.
