Hyundai Motor Company has delivered a new fleet of electric buses to Yakushima Island, supporting the island’s push toward zero-emission public transportation and sustainable tourism.

The delivery includes Hyundai’s Elec City and Elec Town models, both fully electric buses designed for efficient, quiet, and eco-friendly operations. The buses will serve local routes, including those in environmentally sensitive areas and tourist destinations.

Officials from Yakushima Town Office say the electric buses align with the island’s long-term sustainability goals and will help protect its UNESCO World Heritage-listed natural environment. Hyundai’s zero-emission vehicles are seen as a key step in preserving the island’s ecosystem.

Hyundai stated the buses offer low operating costs and high reliability, with charging infrastructure being developed locally to support the new fleet. The Elec City and Elec Town models are equipped with modern safety and comfort features tailored for short-distance travel.

The move is part of Japan’s broader commitment to reducing transportation-related emissions, especially in areas with high environmental value. Local leaders say Yakushima could serve as a model for other island and rural communities across the country.

Hyundai continues to expand its global EV bus deployments, with recent deliveries across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. Company officials say such partnerships reflect Hyundai’s commitment to clean mobility and community-based sustainability.
