For future mobility and attaining diverse R&D milestones, Hyundai Mobis is accelerating the development of new materials. Through the incorporation of high-performance, high-efficiency material innovations, this novel method seeks to both improve its competitive edge in future mobility and effectively address the projected tightening of global environmental rules around 2030.

The company’s material development strategy aligns with the increasing emphasis in recent years on attaining independent competitiveness in materials, equipment, and components (MCE). It already had a solid supply chain in place before the epidemic, and it continues to produce new materials through independent R&D.

Hyundai Mobis declared three key areas for material development to bolster its fundamental capacities in materials for crucial automobile components:

  • Supportable materials that can unite worldwide eco-friendly regulations,
  • Creative materials that will guide mobility developments, and
  • Electronic materials allowed through indirect verification methods.

Sustainable Materials: Recycling Plastics & Bio-Based Innovations

Hyundai Mobis use eco-friendly materials that come from recycling or using bio-based materials.

Plastic components are mostly made from recycled materials. The process of recovering recyclable parts from end-of-life vehicles or household waste, processing them, and adding additives results in the regenerated materials.

With this technique, Hyundai Mobis was able to produce a covering for the lower arm of a car’s underbody that provides protection. The product has the same physical properties as traditional materials, even with 50% recycled plastic.

Innovative Materials to Reduce Rare Metal Usage

Hyundai Mobis is accelerating the development of new materials that utilize fewer rare metals like nickel while improving performance. An essential part of electric vehicle power conversion is nickel. Moreover, Hyundai Mobis has created a new substance that aids in lowering the amount of nickel used in inductors.

Hyundai Mobis has also begun developing a brand-new material that is completely ‘nickel-free’ and the first of its sort worldwide. The company is also focusing on developing new substances to increase its competitiveness in the electrification and electronic component industries.

Digitizing Automotive Material Technologies

Hyundai Mobis is also making significant investments in digital materials technology, fusing IT with conventional material areas. By realistically simulating and forecasting the various material properties needed in vehicle components, the company is improving alignment.
Notably, the company actively recruits expertise from diverse sectors as R&D extends into digital materials, and it has over 100  research and development personnel in materials science to boost its capabilities in fresh material development.
