Iberdrola and the City of Madrid have inaugurated the largest public electric vehicle (EV) charging hub in the Spanish capital. Located at the Plaza de Colón parking facility, the site features 20 high-capacity charging points, making it the most significant initiative of its kind within the city limits.

Developed in collaboration with Madrid City Council and Empark, the project includes chargers ranging from 50 kW to 400 kW, capable of serving a variety of electric vehicles including cars, vans, and light-duty trucks. The facility’s high-speed chargers enable drivers to reach 80% battery capacity in under 10 minutes, improving convenience for urban users.

This EV hub is powered entirely by 100% renewable energy sourced through Iberdrola’s clean energy supply. The company emphasized its focus on sustainability by ensuring zero-emission operation across all charging points, in alignment with Madrid’s broader decarbonization and air quality improvement goals.

Iberdrola’s investment is part of its wider commitment to deploy more than 500 ultra-fast charging stations across Spain by 2025. The Colón facility, due to its central location and high traffic volume, is expected to become a key node in Madrid’s green mobility infrastructure.

Speaking at the launch, Iberdrola’s representatives noted the importance of public-private collaboration in accelerating the shift toward electric transport. Madrid officials echoed this sentiment, stressing that improved EV infrastructure is critical to reducing pollution and achieving the city’s climate targets.

The opening of the Plaza de Colón EV hub highlights a growing trend across European cities where sustainable transport and renewable energy come together. As EV adoption rises, such hubs are becoming essential to meet the demands of modern urban mobility and environmental stewardship.
