According to reports, MG Motor India, a joint venture between SAIC Motor of China and JSW Group of India, would introduce a new electric vehicle in India to compete with Tata’s planned Curvv EV.
According to sources cited by The Times of India, the EV will be introduced near to India’s holiday season. According to the report, it will cost less than Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom), which is in between the Coment and ZS EV.
The new MG EV will be a crossover utility vehicle, or CUV for short, which is essentially a utility vehicle built on a unibody structure as opposed to the body-on-frame design used in most conventional SUVs.
Similar to the ZS EV, the new MG EV is anticipated to include a 50.3 kWh battery pack. But given that the new model would weigh less, it might have a longer range than the 461 kilometers that the ZS is supposed to have.
In addition, the forthcoming MG electric vehicle is anticipated to use the same front axle-mounted motor with 176 horsepower and 280 Nm of torque.
The Times of India purported to possess first-hand video of what the business refers to as a “Intelligent CUV.” The source further stated that the car features big wheels and a towering posture with a roof resembling a coupe. Nonetheless, the report stated that some elements were hidden due to heavy camouflage.
The Comet EV and the MG ZS EV are the two electric vehicles that MG Motors currently sells. Electric vehicles now make up about 35% of MG’s total sales, a considerable increase in the company’s EV sales over the past few years.
In just the last three months, more than 500 ZS EVs have been sold; from Q1 to Q2, 2024, sales of these vehicles increased by an astounding 95%. Over this time, MG’s EV sales increased by 39% overall.
With the impending electric CUV, MG hopes to improve its standing in India’s growing EV industry, which Tata Motors presently controls. It is anticipated that the new model would further propel success in the domestic market and strengthen MG’s electric car trident.
