In Quebec, Canada, Kempower has partnered with Bornes Quebec and the Eastern Townships School Board (ETSB) to introduce a new electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure designed specifically for school buses. This initiative marks a significant step towards sustainable transportation in the region.
Innovative Charging System for School Bus Fleets
Kempower has successfully commissioned a charging facility for the ETSB, making it one of the first of its kind in North America. The system utilizes Kempower’s cloud-based ChargEye software, which allows ETSB to manage and oversee the charging process, including generating reports for potential carbon credits.
Scalable and Secure Charging Infrastructure
A standout feature of the system is its ability to scale, update, and share power efficiently. The system can automatically recognize fleet buses when they are plugged in, eliminating the need for a gated security system. This functionality also allows the station to operate as a public charging hub during off-hours, such as after school, on holidays, and during summer breaks.
Support for Growing Electric School Bus Fleet
Currently, 30 electric buses for school are operating at the ETSB location, supported by 14 charging connections. These include six double satellites, two single satellites, and three chargers. The facility is designed to support ETSB’s larger fleet of 77 buses, which is 39% electrified, with a goal of reaching 65% by 2030.
Sustainability and Future Expansion
The new infrastructure ensures that the ETSB can accommodate future expansion, supporting the increasing demand for electric school transportation while promoting environmental sustainability. The collaboration between Kempower, Bornes Quebec, and ETSB exemplifies the growing trend of integrating clean energy solutions into public transportation systems.
