In a significant advancement towards sustainable transportation, EKA Mobility, KPIT Technologies, and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) have collaborated to launch Kerala’s inaugural hydrogen fuel cell bus at Cochin International Airport (CIAL) in Kochi. This initiative aligns with India’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting green mobility solutions.

The 9-meter bus, capable of seating over 30 passengers, is part of a three-year Proof of Concept (PoC) project aimed at evaluating the feasibility and efficiency of hydrogen-powered public transportation. The bus was unveiled at the Global Hydrogen & Renewable Energy Summit held in Kochi on March 12 and 13, 2025.

EKA Mobility contributed by integrating KPIT’s hydrogen fuel cell technology into its electric bus platform, while BPCL established the necessary hydrogen generation, dispensing, and refueling infrastructure at CIAL. This collaboration ensures a comprehensive hydrogen mobility ecosystem, facilitating the seamless operation of the fuel cell bus.

Dr. Sudhir Mehta, Founder and CEO of EKA Mobility, expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating that it underscores the company’s dedication to pioneering clean energy solutions for urban transportation. He emphasized that this collaboration aims to accelerate India’s transition to hydrogen-powered public transit.

This deployment not only demonstrates the viability of hydrogen fuel cell technology in public transportation but also positions Kerala as a frontrunner in adopting sustainable mobility solutions, contributing to the nation’s net-zero emission goals.
