LG Energy Solution has announced a partnership with U.S.-based electric vehicle (EV) startup Aptera Motors to supply batteries for its upcoming solar-powered EVs, marking a significant step forward in sustainable transportation technology.

The collaboration, unveiled Monday, will see LG Energy Solution providing Aptera with advanced lithium-ion battery cells. These batteries will power Aptera’s solar EVs, which are designed to operate with minimal reliance on conventional charging by harnessing solar energy.

“We are thrilled to partner with Aptera Motors on this groundbreaking project,” an LG Energy Solution spokesperson said in a statement. “This partnership aligns with our commitment to advancing clean energy solutions and supporting innovative EV technologies.”

Aptera’s solar EVs are engineered to maximize energy efficiency, featuring lightweight materials and a streamlined design that minimizes drag. The vehicle’s solar panels can generate enough electricity to power daily commutes in sunny climates, while the batteries supplied by LG Energy Solution will store energy for extended travel.

“This partnership with LG Energy Solution is crucial to achieving our vision of creating the world’s most efficient vehicle,” said Aptera Motors co-founder Chris Anthony. “Their cutting-edge battery technology is a perfect fit for our solar EVs, helping us deliver sustainable and affordable mobility solutions.”

The partnership reflects growing interest in solar-powered EVs as a potential solution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and decrease reliance on charging infrastructure. Industry analysts have praised the collaboration, citing its potential to advance renewable energy integration in the automotive sector.

Aptera plans to begin production of its solar EVs in 2025, targeting eco-conscious consumers and early adopters of sustainable technology.
