The cost of charging your electric car has increased in Mumbai, following approval by the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC).
The regulatory body has approved a 14-18% increase in the tariff for charging at EV stations throughout the city.
While Adani Electricity’s EV outlets will see a 14% increase in tariffs, BEST will see a 16% increase. Vehicles that use Tata Power will have to spend an additional 18% for charging.
According to officials, the revised tariff for all electricity companies in Mumbai for electric car charging has been reduced to 7.25/unit.
Power companies will receive a discount of Rs 1.50 per unit for charging between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
The MERC has issued a notification in this regard which stated that the revised tariff is applicable for all EV charging stations, including battery swapping stations.
Charging stations in other places, such as restaurants and convenience stores, must bill customers at the commercial category tariff, according to the authority. Individual users can also obtain separate charging connections under this group.
EV registrations in Maharashtra increased significantly in the previous fiscal year. In 2022-23, 1,00,750 battery electric vehicles (EV) were registered, a 130% rise over the previous year. In 2021-22, 43,722 new EVs were registered in the province, while 7,544 new EVs were registered in 2020-21.
Meanwhile, the electricity tariff for Mumbai residents has increased by 5 to 10% after the MERC agreed to the distribution companies’ price hike proposal.
