Governor Kathy Hochul has announced a significant expansion of New York State’s Drive Clean Rebate program, allocating an additional $30 million to make electric vehicles (EVs) more accessible and affordable for residents across all 62 counties. This initiative aims to accelerate the adoption of clean transportation options statewide.
The enhanced program offers point-of-sale rebates of up to $2,000 off the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) on over 60 eligible EV models. Higher rebates are available for long-range, all-electric vehicles. Since its inception in 2017, the program has already provided more than 190,000 rebates, reflecting its growing popularity among consumers.
Administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), the Drive Clean Rebate program is designed to reduce the upfront cost of EVs, making them a more viable option for a broader range of New Yorkers. This expansion aligns with the state’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainable transportation solutions.
In addition to financial incentives, the program supports the development of EV charging infrastructure throughout the state. By increasing access to convenient and reliable charging stations, the initiative aims to alleviate range anxiety and encourage more residents to consider EVs as a practical alternative to traditional gasoline-powered vehicles.
Governor Hochul emphasized that this investment not only benefits consumers but also contributes to the state’s environmental goals. “New York’s leadership in driving the adoption of electric vehicles is helping consumers stay within their budget when purchasing or leasing a new electric car,” she stated. “Along with increased savings, we are building out the infrastructure needed to provide hard-working New Yorkers convenient access to charging, helping to reduce range anxiety and make it easier to drive electric.”
The expanded Drive Clean Rebate program is part of New York’s broader strategy to achieve a zero-emissions future. With continued investments in EV incentives and infrastructure, the state aims to lead the nation in clean transportation adoption, benefiting both the environment and its residents.
