Nissan is developing a budget-friendly electric vehicle (EV), informally dubbed the “Baby Juke,” aiming to compete with models like the Dacia Spring and Citroën e-C3. Priced under £20,000, this compact EV is designed to offer an SUV-inspired aesthetic at a hatchback price point, targeting urban drivers seeking affordable electric mobility.

Built on Renault Group’s Ampere Small platform—the same architecture underpinning the upcoming Renault Twingo E-Tech—the new model will measure under four meters in length. Philippe Brunet, head of Powertrain and EV Engineering at Renault’s Ampere division, confirmed the reuse of the modified platform, stating, “The car is less than four metres long. This is the same e-architecture, and we redeveloped the battery, new e-powertrain, and the top hat (new body). We did this in two years.”

The EV will feature a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, known for its safety and longevity compared to standard lithium-ion packs. This choice makes the vehicle a practical and low-maintenance option for everyday users. Its design, heavily influenced by the popular Nissan Juke, is expected to resonate with younger buyers and urban commuters alike, combining rugged aesthetics with modern electric performance.

Nissan’s initiative aligns with its broader strategy to expand its electric vehicle lineup and make EVs more accessible to a wider audience. By leveraging existing platforms and focusing on cost-effective battery technology, the company aims to reduce production costs and offer competitive pricing in the growing affordable EV market.

The introduction of this new model is part of Nissan’s commitment to electrification and sustainability. With plans to launch 30 new models by 2026, including 16 electrified vehicles, Nissan is positioning itself to meet the increasing demand for electric mobility solutions worldwide.

As the EV market continues to evolve, Nissan’s upcoming affordable electric car is poised to play a significant role in providing cost-effective and environmentally friendly transportation options, particularly in urban settings where compact and efficient vehicles are in high demand.
