Nissan has revealed its “X-in-1” strategy for electrified powertrain research. The strategy calls for basic EV and e-POWER engine components to be shared and modularized, resulting in a 30% decrease in development and production costs by 2026 compared to 2019.
Nissan’s X-in-1 strategy seeks to boost the competitiveness of its EV and e-POWER cars. Nissan has created a 3-in-1 engine concept that modularizes the motor, converter, and reducer for use in EVs. A 5-in-1 prototype is intended for use in e-POWER cars, which will also modularize the generator and increaser.

The X-in-1 approach, which includes 3-in-1, 5-in-1, and other potential variations, was designed to allow the production of EV and e-POWER core components on the same line.

Nissan was the first manufacturer to mass-market an EV, the Nissan LEAF, in 2010. Nissan has been attentively listening to its EV consumers all over the globe in order to constantly improve its electrification technologies. Nissan introduced its unique e-POWER electric engine in 2016, based on its EV technology, which offers the same driving enjoyment as an EV due to its 100% motor drive.

The X-in-1 method of developing electric powertrains offers the following advantages:

– By sharing and modularizing key components, manufacturing efficiencies increase and powertrain costs are reduced by roughly 30% compared to 2019. Nissan hopes to achieve price equivalence between e-POWER and ICE cars by 2026.

– Reducing the unit’s size and weight enhances vehicle efficiency while reducing noise and vibration.

– Use a freshly created motor that uses no more than 1% of the magnet’s weight in heavy rare earth elements.

– The sharing of key components and control technology allows Nissan EVs to provide a pleasant motoring experience.

Senior Vice President Toshihiro Hirai, who leads powertrain & EV engineering development, said, “We make the most of our expertise and know-how from our more-than-a-decade-long development and production of electrified technologies. Through our innovations in electrified powertrain development, we’ll continue to create new value for customers and deliver 100% motor-driven vehicles – EVs and e-POWER – as widely as possible.”
