The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) intends to build 82 electric vehicle charging stations in the coming months for the ease of electric vehicle owners.
Most stations will be hosted by PMC, which administers buildings, premises, and ward offices. The Pune Municipal Corporation is currently identifying locations, and the stations will be placed through a public-private partnership (PPP).The PMC will provide the infrastructure at no expense to them. They intend to build 500 charging sites in stages.
According to a PMC official, “The administration is expanding charging stations because of the increasing number of vehicles that run on batteries. The main PMC building already has charging points. In parking lots of various PMC-run buildings, thirty charging points will be installed. A maximum of four cars can be charged simultaneously.”
Another official stated that in the first phase, they would test the stations and make changes based on user input.
The government is currently working on a plan that will provide a Rs 25,000 subsidy for electric auto-rickshaws, similar to the one provided for CNG auto-rickshaws a few decades ago. Officials verified that the specifics were being worked out. This is an attempt to promote the use of electric cars in public transportation.
Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML), is also adding electric buses to its fleet. This will be done in a gradual manner. An official stated that the Pune Municipal Corporation will provide all necessary assistance to PMPML for charging points for electric buses.
