The Puducherry government is set to introduce 25 electric buses into its public transport system. This initiative, part of the Smart City project, aims to reduce vehicular pollution and enhance the efficiency of public transportation in the Union Territory. The buses, operated under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, will initially ply on 15 routes within urban areas, offering a cleaner and quieter commuting experience to residents.
The procurement of these buses is backed by a ₹23 crore grant under the Smart City scheme. The selected consortium, comprising Evey Trans Pvt Ltd and Olectra Greentech Ltd, is responsible for the supply, operation, and maintenance of the buses, as well as the establishment of necessary charging infrastructure. The first prototype is expected to arrive soon, with full deployment anticipated in the coming months.
Looking ahead, Puducherry plans to expand its electric bus fleet further. Under the Prime Minister’s e-bus Seva scheme, the Union Territory is eligible to procure an additional 75 electric buses. A Detailed Project Report has been submitted to the central government, outlining the deployment of 50 buses on inter-city routes and the remaining on urban routes. This expansion aligns with the government’s vision to achieve a 100% electric bus fleet by the end of 2025.
To support this transition, the government is investing in infrastructure development, including the establishment of bus depots and charging stations. The Centre is providing a 100% grant for depot infrastructure and a 90% grant for behind-the-meter charging infrastructure. Additionally, an Intelligent Transport System (ITS) is being implemented to enhance operational efficiency, featuring real-time tracking, automated fare collection, and improved fleet management.
The shift to electric buses is expected to yield significant environmental benefits. By replacing diesel buses, the Puducherry Road Transport Corporation anticipates saving approximately 1,800 litres of diesel daily, leading to substantial reductions in carbon emissions. Moreover, the electric buses will contribute to lower noise pollution, offering a more pleasant commuting experience for passengers.
As Puducherry embarks on this green journey, the successful implementation of the electric bus initiative could serve as a model for other cities aiming to adopt sustainable public transport solutions. The government’s commitment to environmental sustainability and urban development reflects a forward-thinking approach to addressing the challenges of modern urbanization.
