The Punjab government, which is led by the Aam Aadmi Party, approved the Punjab Electric Vehicle Policy (2022). The first 1 lakh electric vehicles registered in the state will receive incentives worth up to Rs 10,000 from the government. Incentives under the EV policy will range from Rs 30,000 to Rs 50,000 for the first 5,000 light commercial vehicles (LCVs) and the first 10,000 electric autorickshaws and e-rickshaws.
The government also wants to make Punjab a preferred location for EV, component, and battery manufacturing. It also wants to speed up the creation of jobs and R&D opportunities.
According to the State, this will also aid in lowering the environmental pollution. For purchasers of EVs, it has also waived registration fees and road tax.
The EV policy seeks to encourage the use of electric vehicles in cities like Ludhiana, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Bathinda, and Patiala, which account for more than half of all the state’s operating vehicles.
