In order to produce retrofit kits that convert the vintage Renault 4, Renault 5, and Twingo into all-electric vehicles, the French automaker has teamed up with EV specialist R-Fit.
The Renault 4 kit costs 11,900 Euros ($12,800) and can be installed at one of R-garages Fit’s by European owners of these models. According to the manufacturer, the retrofit kit for the Renault 5 will go on sale in France in September 2023, while the kit for the original Twingo will follow at a later time.
The Renault 4 conversion consists of an onboard charger that can fully recharge the battery in three and a half hours using a 16-amp 220-volt domestic plug, a 10.7-kilowatt-hour lithium iron phosphate battery rated at 105 volts, a brushless synchronous motor that replaces the old internal combustion engine, and the original transmission.
The car has a two-year warranty, and a driving range of about 80 kilometres (50 miles), and according to the company, the weight distribution is unchanged. Additionally, the owner receives all the necessary certification and registration documents that list “Electricity” as the fuel type rather than “Gasoline.”
