Rivian Adds Tesla NACS Plugs to Its Charging Network

Rivian Automotive has taken a significant step toward interoperability by integrating Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) plugs into its Rivian Adventure Network (RAN), enhancing fast‑charging station options for its own customers and other EV brands.

Rivian began offering access to Tesla Supercharger stations in early 2024 via a complimentary NACS‑to‑CCS1 adapter for R1T and R1S owners. Starting in 2025, new Rivian vehicles—including the R1T and R1S—will be equipped with native NACS ports, eliminating the need for adapters.

To further enhance charging flexibility, Rivian has retrofitted its first charging outpost in Joshua Tree, California, installing four NACS plugs alongside eight existing CCS ports. Additional stations, including the upcoming Yosemite and Hamptons outposts, are scheduled for NACS upgrades later this summer.

The move follows broader industry momentum: in June 2023, Rivian was one of the early adopters of NACS alongside major automakers such as Ford and GM, aimed at improving connectivity to Tesla’s 15,000+ Supercharging stalls across North America.

Rivian CEO R.J. Scaringe has described both the RAN and Tesla Supercharger networks as the only “great” fast‑charging systems in the U.S. By offering both NACS and CCS ports, Rivian reinforces its commitment to the seamless and reliable EV charging ecosystem.

Although RAN remains significantly smaller than Tesla’s network, these upgrades promise immediate benefits to Rivian owners and other EV drivers, especially those traveling to more remote destinations where RAN outposts serve as unique infrastructure anchors.
