Saranac Lake is advancing its electric vehicle (EV) goals with the help of a $482,000 grant aimed at expanding the village’s EV charging infrastructure.
The funding, awarded through New York State’s Climate Smart Communities Grant Program, will support the installation of new EV chargers in key municipal locations, helping to meet rising demand from residents and visitors alike.
Village officials said the project will include a mix of Level 2 and fast chargers to improve accessibility and encourage broader EV adoption in the Adirondack region. Work is expected to begin later this year.
“This grant helps us lead the way in clean transportation while supporting tourism and local sustainability,” said Village Trustee Kelly Brunette. “It’s a win for our environment and our economy.”
The initiative aligns with New York State’s larger climate action goals, which include transitioning to zero-emission transportation and cutting greenhouse gas emissions statewide. Saranac Lake was recognized as a certified Climate Smart Community in 2022.
The EV infrastructure expansion is part of a broader push to modernize village operations and reduce the municipality’s environmental impact. Officials noted additional green projects are also in development.
