The Managing Director of Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, Shailesh Chandra, emphasized that the future of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) is a requirement, not an option. This is because the world has committed to attaining net carbon zero. Chandra, who has been influential in creating India’s electric car business for the past five years, recognizes the volatility of anticipating new technology uptake. However, he emphasizes the significance of setting lofty goals and working hard to achieve them.
According to Chandra, if India wants to be carbon-neutral by 2070, efforts must begin today. Tata Motors has declared a goal of obtaining this status by 2040, with a 50% target by 2030. Despite several setbacks in the electric vehicle industry, Tata
Chandra remains optimistic about the future success of their electric vehicle models, aiming for a 50% market share. He mentions the global quick expansion of the BEV market, with considerable increases in major areas including as China, Europe, and the United States. While noting the market’s economic concerns and legislative changes, Chandra is hopeful about the future, particularly given Tata Motors’ outstanding development in the Indian automotive market.
According to Chandra, increased competition in the market is a good thing. He emphasizes that the transition to BEVs is not voluntary, but rather required, as it corresponds with the global commitment to net carbon zero. All Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) face the same strain, making the shift to electric vehicles critical and urgent.
