Tata Motors has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Green Energy Mobility Solutions (GEMS), the electric mobility arm of Universal Bus Services (UBS), to supply 100 Magna EV intercity coaches. The agreement was formalized during the Passenger Vehicle Expo 2.0 in Chennai, where Tata showcased its latest in commercial passenger mobility solutions.

With UBS being a leading intercity travel operator in South India, the formation of GEMS marks its strategic shift toward electrified public transport. Through this agreement, UBS will integrate Tata’s 44-seater Magna EV coaches, each offering up to 300 km of range per charge, into its network to enhance passenger comfort and reduce operating emissions.

The MoU signing was attended by Dr. T.R.B. Rajaa, the Hon’ble Tamil Nadu Industries Minister, along with delegates from the state government and leaders from the All Omni Bus Owners Association (AOBOA). Rajaa said the collaboration aligns with Tamil Nadu’s commitment to developing a greener, future-ready transportation ecosystem.

Sunil Kumar Ravindran, Managing Partner of UBS and Director at GEMS, described the partnership as a milestone marking the company’s shift toward electric intercity travel. He emphasised that the Magna EV fleet will offer improved passenger comfort, quieter cabins, and significant cost savings due to reduced fuel expenses and emissions.

Anand S, Vice President & Head of Tata Motors’ Commercial Passenger Vehicle Business, called the MoU “a landmark moment” in Tata’s mission to transform intercity long-distance transportation. The Magna EV, developed through rigorous testing and customer feedback, aims to set new benchmarks in safety, sustainability, and efficiency.

Tata Motors already leads India’s electric bus segment, with models like Starbus EV and Ultra EV operating in intra‑city routes and now expanding into intercity travel with the Magna EV. Its existing EV fleet—over 3,600 buses across 11 cities—has collectively clocked more than 340 million km with over 95% uptime, managed via the Fleet Edge connected vehicle platform.
