Tata Motors has announced that its popular micro‑SUV, the Punch, has crossed the six lakh production mark in under four years since its launch in October 2021. The milestone reinforces its position as India’s top‑selling car, including petrol, CNG, and EV variants, and marks notable success in 2024’s auto market.
The Punch’s appeal spans both its internal combustion and electric versions. In 2024, it emerged as the best‑selling passenger vehicle in India—driven by its multi‑powertrain lineup and strong safety credentials, including five‑star ratings under both Global NCAP and Bharat NCAP.
Tata Motors reports that nearly 70 percent of Punch ICE buyers in India are first‑time car owners, while one‑quarter of Punch EV customers are women. Geographically, sales span Tier‑1 to Tier‑3 cities: 24 percent, 42 percent, and 34 percent respectively—highlighting its wide-ranging appeal.
In FY 2025, the Punch accounted for roughly 36 percent of Tata Motors’ total passenger vehicle sales and held a commanding 38 percent share in the sub‑compact SUV segment. The brand also recorded a year‑on‑year growth of around 15 percent.
The Punch EV, introduced in January 2024, achieved early traction with over 10,000 units sold and topped safety charts via a five‑star Bharat NCAP rating. It is available in two configurations—25 kWh and 35 kWh—offering certified MIDC ranges up to 421 km.
Tata’s design strategy for the Punch emphasises robust styling, high ground clearance, and family‑friendly features such as multiple airbags, electronic stability control, and driver assistance. Combined with its pricing flexibility across ICE, CNG, and EV trims, the Punch reflects Tata’s successful effort to blend safety, value, and versatility for India’s mass market.
