Apple supplier TDK has partnered with McLaren Racing in Formula E electric motor racing as the Japanese components giant seeks to grow in the electric car sector. TDK, the world’s leading supplier of smartphone batteries, was once well-known to consumers for its cassette cassettes. It is growing its operations in passive components and sensors with the goal of increasing its presence in the EV supply chain.
According to an official, TDK will think about supplying components like sensors and inverters for the Nissan e-4ORCE 05 cars that McLaren uses, which use the company’s technology.
“Formula E technology is always at the cutting edge of EVs and we want them to use our components so we can sharpen our technology,” said Taro Ikushima, CEO of TDK’s Electronic Components Business Company, in an interview.
With over 25% of its total sales coming from the automotive sector, TDK has been a major supplier of components including ceramic capacitors and temperature sensors since its establishment in 1935. Despite the fact that many fans are still loyal to Formula One due to its unique internal combustion engine sound, interest in Formula E is growing.
The speed at which the world will abandon gasoline-powered cars is a matter of debate, but Toyota chairman Akio Toyoda projects that at their peak, EVs will make up 30% of the global market.
TDK sees possibilities across the spectrum, as battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids use 100% more multilayer ceramic chip capacitors and 60% more than gasoline-powered vehicles, respectively.
