Tesla has officially launched its much-anticipated Model Y in the country, starting at ₹59.89 lakh (ex-showroom). This marks the electric giant’s formal entry into the Indian passenger car market with a fully-built unit, sparking excitement among EV enthusiasts and luxury buyers alike.
The Model Y, known globally for its blend of performance, technology, and practicality, comes with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) system and an estimated range of 533 km (WLTP). With a top speed of 217 kmph and acceleration from 0 to 100 kmph in just 5 seconds, it promises both thrill and efficiency. Tesla’s iconic minimalist interior, panoramic glass roof, and 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system make the Model Y a standout in the EV landscape.
Imported via the CBU route, the SUV arrives in India with a substantial import duty, justifying its premium price tag. Tesla is reportedly testing the waters of India’s growing EV market before considering local manufacturing or assembly. The company’s global strategy has emphasized entering promising EV markets with flagship models before scaling up operations based on demand and policy support.
The Indian government’s recent push to reduce import duties on EVs under certain conditions has likely paved the way for Tesla’s long-awaited debut. With Tesla officially registering in India in 2021 and multiple meetings held with central and state authorities since, the Model Y’s arrival comes after years of anticipation and speculation.
Tesla is expected to initially sell its vehicles in select metro cities, supported by its dedicated mobile service and Supercharger network expansion plans. Mumbai and Delhi are expected to be the first locations to receive service infrastructure and sales support, followed by other tier-1 cities as demand scales.
With its launch, the Tesla Model Y enters a competitive landscape currently dominated by premium EVs like the BMW iX1, Kia EV6, and Volvo XC40 Recharge. While priced on the higher end, Tesla’s global reputation for EV innovation, over-the-air updates, and autonomous driving features could give it a strong edge in India’s fast-evolving electric mobility space.
