Tesla has officially signed a lease agreement for its first showroom in Mumbai, marking a significant step in its efforts to expand into the Indian market. The showroom will be located in the Maker Maxity building, situated in the Bandra Kurla Complex, a prime commercial and retail area near Mumbai’s airport.

The lease, which began on February 16, 2025, is set for five years, with an initial annual rent of $446,000. The showroom spans 4,003 square feet, roughly the size of a basketball court. Over the course of the lease, rent will increase by 5% annually, totaling over $2.5 million over the five years.

Tesla’s entry into Mumbai follows a challenging period of negotiating the complexities of the Indian market, including high import tariffs that exceed 100%. Despite this, Tesla remains committed to selling its vehicles in India, offering imported models through this new showroom.

As part of its expansion plans, Tesla has also begun listing numerous positions in India, including customer engagement managers, retail managers, and service managers, to support its growing operations. The showroom’s location near other high-profile retailers, including Apple, highlights Tesla’s strategic approach to reaching affluent Indian consumers.

Although Tesla is moving forward with its showroom in Mumbai, the company faces significant barriers due to the high tariffs on imported vehicles in India. Nevertheless, this development reflects Tesla’s broader ambition to establish a presence in the country’s emerging electric vehicle market.
