UltraTech Cement Limited plans to use more electric vehicles (EV trucks) in its logistical operations. The company has inked a transport service contract that will deploy approximately 100 EV trucks.
These vehicles will transport 75,000 MT of clinker per month between UltraTech’s integrated cement production facility at Dhar Cement Works in Madhya Pradesh and its grinding facility at Dhule Cement Works in Maharashtra, covering a distance of about 400 kilometers round-trip.
This effort is modeled after a successful January 2024 pilot project that involved five EV trucks on the same route. Truck drivers were given specialized training as part of the trial, and infrastructure for charging was established. Based on the outcomes of the pilot, UltraTech has decided to expand the number of EV trucks it utilizes in its operations. In addition to evaluating possible routes for future deployment, the company plans to conduct another trial for transferring clinker between two of its other manufacturing facilities.
In response to the initiative, K C Jhanwar, Managing Director of UltraTech Cement Limited, stated that the company’s sustainability goals and its pledge to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050 align with the expansion of EV trucks. UltraTech has adopted sustainable logistics practices, including the use of CNG vehicles since 2021, LNG cars since 2022, and EV trucks starting in 2024.
In the future, UltraTech plans to deploy 500 electric vehicles by June 2025 as part of the Government of India’s eFAST program. The company now uses a fleet of 468 CNG and 67 LNG trucks to move supplies and merchandise between many production plants.
UltraTech Cement Limited is progressively expanding the number of electric trucks it uses in order to improve the sustainability of its logistical operations. After launching a successful trial program in January 2024, the company has stated plans to deploy 100 additional electric vehicles for clinker distribution. Between UltraTech’s integrated cement production facility at Dhar Cement Works in Madhya Pradesh and the grinding facility at Dhule Cement Works in Maharashtra, these trucks will make a 400-kilometer round-trip journey.
