Uttar Pradesh (UP) has emerged as India’s leader in electric vehicle (EV) adoption, registering over 4.14 lakh EVs, surpassing Delhi’s 1.83 lakh and Maharashtra’s 1.79 lakh. This significant milestone underscores UP’s commitment to sustainable transportation and its proactive approach to embracing electric mobility.
A major factor contributing to this achievement is the widespread use of e-rickshaws, which constitute approximately 85% of EV sales in the state. These vehicles have become a popular mode of transport, especially in urban and semi-urban areas, due to their affordability and efficiency.
The state’s progress in EV adoption is further bolstered by the Electric Vehicle Manufacturing and Mobility Policy 2022. This policy aims to attract ₹30,000 crore in investments and create 10 lakh jobs, focusing on accelerating EV adoption, developing robust charging infrastructure, and establishing UP as a global hub for EV and battery manufacturing.
UP has also been the largest beneficiary of the central government’s FAME I and FAME II schemes, which promote the adoption and manufacturing of hybrid and electric vehicles in India. These initiatives have provided financial incentives and support for the development of EV infrastructure across the state.
To further enhance its EV ecosystem, the UP government has approved the installation of over 300 new EV charging stations across 16 municipal bodies. Ayodhya is expected to receive the highest number of these new charging points, aligning with the state’s efforts to improve accessibility and convenience for EV users.
With projections indicating that India could have 102 million EVs by 2030, UP’s initiatives in EV adoption and infrastructure development position it as a frontrunner in the country’s transition to sustainable mobility. The state’s comprehensive approach serves as a model for other regions aiming to promote electric transportation.
