Volkswagen has unveiled plans to invest $580 million to produce a new mid-size pick-up truck tailored for the South American market. Production is slated to commence in 2027 at the Pacheco plant in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina.
The forthcoming vehicle will succeed the current Amarok model, which has been manufactured at the Pacheco facility since 2010. This new iteration is set to be developed, designed, and produced entirely in South America, ensuring it aligns with the specific preferences and requirements of customers in the region.
Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen brand and Head of the Brand Group Core, emphasized the strategic importance of this initiative, stating that regional growth and localization are vital components of Volkswagen’s global future strategy. He highlighted that the investment reinforces the company’s commitment to the South American market and aims to deliver a product that meets local customer needs.
In addition to vehicle development, the investment will facilitate technological enhancements at the Pacheco plant. These upgrades are expected to advance production processes, focusing on quality, innovation, and environmental sustainability. Volkswagen Group Argentina noted that this move underscores the company’s confidence in Argentina’s industrial capabilities and its role in Volkswagen’s regional strategy.
While focusing on the South American market, Volkswagen will continue producing the second-generation Amarok in collaboration with Ford at the Silverton plant in South Africa. This approach reflects Volkswagen’s strategy to diversify production locations to better serve different regional markets.
The new pick-up truck is part of Volkswagen’s broader objective to become a global technology leader among volume manufacturers by 2030. By expanding its presence in regional markets and developing products tailored to local needs, Volkswagen aims to strengthen its competitive position worldwide.
This investment represents a significant commitment to the South American automotive industry, highlighting Volkswagen’s dedication to delivering vehicles that cater to the specific demands of customers in the region.
