Volkswagen has reached a significant milestone at its Zwickau plant in Germany, producing its one millionth all-electric vehicle. The landmark vehicle, an ID.3 GTX Performance in Kings Red Metallic, will soon be delivered to a customer in Bavaria via the Transparent Factory in Dresden. This achievement comes just over five years after the plant commenced its transition to electric vehicle (EV) production.
The Zwickau facility, a cornerstone of Volkswagen’s EV strategy, manufactures six electric models across the Volkswagen, Audi, and Cupra brands. Since the last combustion engine vehicle rolled off its assembly line in June 2020, the plant has been dedicated entirely to EV production. In 2024 alone, it produced approximately 204,000 vehicles, underscoring its pivotal role in the company’s electrification efforts.
Danny Auerswald, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Sachsen GmbH, lauded the workforce’s dedication: “One million electric cars produced is a strong achievement by the workforce. Despite numerous challenges in recent years, the team has always delivered the models on time, reliably and in high quality.” He emphasized the importance of maintaining the plant’s competitiveness to secure future investments.
Uwe Kunstmann, Chairman of the General Works Council of Volkswagen Sachsen GmbH, highlighted the plant’s pioneering role: “Zwickau was the first plant to convert from 100 percent combustion engines to 100 percent electric mobility. We have proven in the Group that we can be relied on in Saxony because we think of our customers and transformation is something we are born with.” He also noted plans to explore opportunities in the circular economy as a strategic expansion.
The Zwickau plant’s transformation began on November 4, 2019, with the production of the ID.3, Volkswagen’s first model based on the modular electric drive matrix (MEB). Over 26 months, the facility successfully launched six EV models, completing its transition to a fully electric, multi-brand production site. To date, 2.3 million MEB vehicles have been delivered globally, with nearly half originating from Zwickau.
Looking ahead, Volkswagen aims to continue its leadership in the EV market, with the Zwickau plant playing a central role. The company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability positions it to meet the growing demand for electric mobility, while also exploring new avenues such as the circular economy to enhance its environmental stewardship.
