In a significant advancement towards sustainable urban mobility, Volvo Buses has unveiled the Volvo 7800 Electric, Mexico’s first electric articulated and bi-articulated bus. Built on Volvo’s global BZR electromobility platform, this new model aims to enhance the country’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems by offering cleaner and more efficient public transportation options.

High Capacity and Advanced Features

The Volvo 7800 Electric bi-articulated bus measures 25.6 meters in length and can accommodate up to 300 passengers, while the articulated version holds up to 191 passengers. Both models feature a charging capacity of 250 kWh, ensuring efficient operations for urban transit. Additionally, they are equipped with Volvo’s latest active safety systems, enhancing protection for pedestrians and cyclists.

Manufacturing and Delivery Plans

Both the bi-articulated and articulated versions of the Volvo 7800 Electric will be manufactured at Volvo Buses’ facility in Mexico. The company anticipates that the first units will be delivered starting in 2026, marking a significant step in the country’s transition to electric public transportation.

Commitment to Sustainable Transportation

Rafael Kisel, President of Volvo Group Mexico, emphasized the company’s dedication to transforming public transport systems with sustainable and efficient solutions. He noted that this initiative not only benefits operators and passengers but also improves the quality of life in urban areas.

Leveraging the BZR Electromobility Platform

The Volvo 7800 Electric is built on Volvo’s versatile BZR electromobility platform, introduced in March 2024. This platform allows for adaptations to various operational needs, supporting both BRT systems and intercity services. The platform’s flexibility is evident in the development of articulated and bi-articulated versions tailored for the Latin American market.

Future Outlook for Electric Public Transport in Mexico

The introduction of the Volvo 7800 Electric represents a pivotal moment in Mexico’s public transportation landscape. By adopting electric buses, cities can reduce emissions, enhance passenger capacity, and promote sustainable urban development. Volvo’s initiative sets a precedent for other manufacturers and cities to follow in embracing electric mobility solutions.
